It is very important to upgrade the firmware of your Nokia phone because through firmware upgrade you can take advantage of new features, fixes, and updates that can enhance the performance of your phone. Hence, it is advisable to check for firmware upgrade regularly.

Are you considering about upgrading the firmware on your Nokia phone? There are two ways to update the firmware on any phone that runs on Symbian OS. On Nokia, you can use the Nokia’s PC software updater utility to upgrade the firmware of your phone by using a USB cable that connects your phone to the computer. The other method is to use the Wi-Fi feature of your phone to update the firmware without using any connecting cable. Here is how you can go about it.

Through USB data cable
First of all, you need to download the Nokia PC software updater utility and install. Connect the phone to the PC by using the USB data cable and go through the following steps:

1. Secure the existing data of your phone by doing the backup. During the firmware upgrade process nothing will happen to the data present on your memory card. On the other hand, it is recommended to backup the SMS and contacts present on your phone.

2. Establish a connection between phone and your PC by using the USB data cable and select the USB connectivity as ‘PC Suite mode’ on your phone. The software will identify your phone and then prompt about the available firmware update for your phone. You can click on the update button and go continue with firmware upgrade process.

3. The software will download the available update for your phone and then install it on your phone. Make sure you have a reliable internet connection for successful installation. The battery of the phone should be fully charged so that it does not exhaust while the update is going on. After the installation the phone will restart and you will be able to use the latest firmware.

Through Wi-Fi on your phone
If you have a Wi-Fi enabled phone such as Nokia 5800 XpressMusic or Nokia E6-00, you can update the firmware over the air. Here is what you need to do:

1. On the main screen, you need to punch in *#0000# and then the firmware version of the Symbian OS will be displayed.

2. You can go to Options and then choose Check for Updates. Through Wi-Fi the phone will connect to web and look for new firmware.

3. It will prompt about whether you want to continue with the installation of firmware or do it later. You can select Now and go ahead with the installation. After the installation the phone will restart and you will be able to use the latest firmware.
