The phone looks similar to Motorola CLIQ and it measures 108 x 53 x 15.3 mm which makes the phone appear quite compact and its rounded edges makes it comfortable to hold in the hand. Even though it is a compact phone, it has got a QWERTY keyboard and still weighs only 133g.

The Motorola BACKFLIP has got a 3.1 HVGA capactive touchscreen display that is able to display 262k colors at a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. You can view the screen clearly from almost any angle and you can view it clearly even when you take your phone outside under the sun. For optimal viewing experience, you can increase the brightness to the max. It lacks light sensor that helps in automatically adjusting the brightness of the screen.

Below the display, you can find three buttons namely menu, home and back. These buttons are touch-sensitive and responds well to the touch. On the right side of the phone, you can find several buttons such as volume controller, microUSB port, and camera launcher. At the top edge of the phone, you can find the 3.5mm audio headset jack with power/lock button. When you open the phone, you will find the trackpad located behind the display. Opening the back cover of the phone will give you access to the battery, SIM card slot and microSD slot. The 5 megapixel camera with LED flash is located at the corner towards the backside of the phone.

Unlike other Android phones that are powered with Android 2.0, the Motorola BACKFLIP is powered with Android 1.6. Just like Motorola CLIQ and Motorola DEVOUR, even the BACKFLIP brings to you the social networking friendly interface called MOTOBLUR. It lets you access your favorite social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Bebo, MySpace, Last FM, Picasa, and Photobucket and it also lets you access your Yahoo!, Google Mail accounts and other personal email accounts. You can enable widgets on the home screen to customize the phone as per your requirements.

You can find all your favorite AT&T apps on the phone such as AT&T Maps, AT&T Navigator, AT&T Radio, etc. If you do not like these apps, you cannot delete them from the phone. The Android’s music player can play MP3, eAAC+, WAV and WMA files and displays album art and track information. The video player can play MP4, H.264, H.263 and WMV files. The interface of the camera is kept simple and the camera takes highly detailed snaps. You can browse on the web at 3G speeds of 7.2Mbps HSDPA and Wi-Fi. The internal memory of the phone is 256MB and comes with an external memory of 2GB and can easily read 32GB microSD. You can perform data transfer through Bluetooth and microUSB. Lastly, the 1400 mAh Li-Ion battery gives a stand-by time of up to 315 hours and talk time of up to 6 hours.
