Unlike other eco-friendly phones of Sony Ericsson, the Elm has got rich features. It is a candybar phone and its body is completely made up of recycled plastic. It does not appear cheap and the back cover is made up of anodized aluminum. The phone weighs only 90g and it measures 110 x 45 x 14 mm. It has got a QVGA TFT display screen that measures 2.2 inches. The images appear very crisp and clear. The display is not clear when viewed under direct sunlight.

On the left side of the phone, you can find the proprietary port of Sony Ericsson. On the opposite side, you can find the volume controller and camera shutter buttons. On the phone, you can the Flash UI interface and come with four preloaded themes that features animated home screens. When it comes to browsing, the Sony Ericsson Elm provides you with Access Netfront web browser. It is a Flash enabled browser which lets you view Flash content like YouTube videos. However, sometimes it poorly renders the web page. You can browse on the web on 3G at 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 2Mbps HSUPA and also through Wi-Fi. Data transfer can be done through USB and v2.1 Bluetooth.

The internal memory of the phone is 280MB and it can read up to 8GB of microSD. The 5 megapixel camera with LED flash is capable of stunning images with accurate and clear details. It has got features like geo-tagging, face and smile detection and it can be also used for video calling. The phone does not have a secondary camera. You can listen to the music through radio and also through music player. You can make use of equalizer presets to change the audio effects; however it does not allow you to customize it. Sound through the loudspeaker and boxed earphones were found to be pretty decent. The phone has got numerous apps like YouTube, Flickr, picture editor, widget manager, eco-friendly apps, etc. You can either use Wisepilot app or Google Maps to make use of assisted GPS feature. Last but not the least, the standard Li-Po 1000 mAh (BST-43) gives a standby time of above 425hrs on 3G and talk time of up to 4hrs on 3G.
