BlackBerry Bold 9790 Review

Rating: ★★★☆☆

BlackBerry Bold 9790 comes with same old tried and tested form factor. What makes this phone stand out from the rest is that it has a powerful processor and has a topnotch quality camera. The phone measures 110 x 60 x 11.4 mm and weighs 107g.

The Bold 9790 is the sibling phone of Bold 9900. Compared to the latter, Bold 9790 is smaller and lightweight. The construction is very solid. The touchscreen display measures 2.45 inches. It has a display resolution of 480 x 360 pixels. The clarity of the display is impressive as even the smallest of the text is clearly readable. You will find no problems in viewing the display in bright sunlight.

The BlackBerry Bold 9790 runs on the latest OS – BlackBerry OS 7. The phone is powered with 1GHz processor and 768 RAM that makes the phone perform smoothly. The internal memory of the phone is 8GB. The external memory slot supports up to 32GB of microSD. Like any other BlackBerry phone, even the Bold 9790 gives good emailing experience. Social networking apps such as Facebook and Twitter are onboard.

The 5 megapixel auto-focus camera quickly springs into action and manages to snap decent photos. When you view the photo in its actual size, you can notice the digital noise. The photos that were taken indoors appeared below average. The camera is capable of recording at resolution of 640 x 480p. The music app on the phone comes with a search bar that lets you easily find any songs. The volume controller can be used for switching tracks. The video player supports videos of 800 x 400p. It even manages to play 720p but very poorly. It supports various video formats including DivX and XviD.

The web browser on BlackBerry 9790 renders pages slowly. It does not support Flash. Scrolling can be done using optical trackpad. You can zoom into the screen by tapping and pinching on screen. You can get high speed web connectivity on Bold 9790 through Wi-Fi and at 7.2Mbps,  HSDPA and 5.76Mbps, HSUPA. Other connectivity features of Bold 9790 include Bluetooth, aGPS, NFC.

BlackBerry Torch 9810 Review

In 2010, one of the most talked about devices from RIM was the BlackBerry Torch 9800 and now BlackBerry has released an updated version of the phone. BlackBerry Torch 9800 failed to attract buyers. However, the upgraded version called the BlackBerry Torch 9800 is all set to grab the attention of people.

The look of the BlackBerry Torch 9810 is similar to that of its predecessor. It has got plastic exterior along with metallic accents. The phone measures 111 x 62 x 14.6mm and weighs 161g.

The BlackBerry Torch 9810 is blessed with capacitive touchscreen display that measures 3.2 inches. It has a display resolution of 480 x 600 pixels. The display is not the brightest one in the business and you will have to shield it to view its content under the bright sun. Even the buttons and ports are placed exactly at the same place as it is present on the predecessor phone. Sliding the display screen upwards unleashes the keyboard. Flipping the Torch to its back will let you see the 5 megapixel camera.

The BlackBerry Torch 9810 is available in two colors namely black and gray. The hardware present on the phone is remarkable. It houses a fast processor of 1.2GHz and a RAM of 768MB. The internal storage of the phone is 8GB and the external memory can read up to 32GB of microSD. The phone runs on the latest BlackBerry OS 7.

The 5 megapixel camera with LED flash manages to snap photos of average quality. The photos taken outdoors appear nice. However, things are not the same when shooting is done in low lighting. The LED flash is good but is not very dependable for completely illuminating the subject for taking photos in dim lighting. The camera is capable of recording HD videos of 720p quality at 30fps.

As far as listening to music is concerned, the OS 7 brings the same old music player. The presentation is very good though. The volume output is average. The video player can play wide range of video formats including DivX and XviD very smoothly.

The WebKit browser onboard is nice but you can face page rendering issues when zooming into the web pages. Navigation is a piece of cake. Poor thing is that the browser lacks Flash. You can browse on the web through 3G and Wi-Fi. Other connectivity options include GPS and Bluetooth. The Li-Ion 1270 mAh battery is capable of producing standby time of nearly 300 hours on 3G and talk time of nearly 6 hours on 3G.

Beginners Guide To BlackBerry Messenger

Did you buy a new BlackBerry phone? If yes then you may curious as to how you can chat using the BlackBerry Messenger. The BlackBerry Messenger is the USP of BlackBerry devices.

What is BBM?
BBM stands for BlackBerry Messenger. It is also called BB Messenger. It is an exclusive chat messenger that allows you to chat with other BlackBerry smartphones. It is a monthly paid service that allows you to do unlimited usage. You pay for the service called BIS which stands for BlackBerry Internet Service. Many people are fond of BBM and some people even buy BlackBerry phones mainly because of this feature.

With BBM onboard, it becomes easy to stay in touch with friends using BlackBerry phones. All the BlackBerry phones have BBM app preinstalled on the phone. The app is consistently upgraded, so you should check whether you are using the latest version or not before you add contacts on it.

How to add contacts on BBM?
To add your friends that use BBM, you need to ask them to provide you their BlackBerry PIN. The PIN number can be found in General Options under Status. It is alphanumeric code. Once you have your friend’s BB PIN, you need to open BBM and below the contacts tab you will see ‘Invite Contacts’. You will be provided with two invitation options such as ‘Invite by sending a PIN or email message’ and another as ‘Invite by scanning a PIN Barcode’. You can choose any one option to add contacts.

When you select the first option, you will be provided a space to enter your friend’s PIN and then you required to press Send. Once your friend confirms the invitation, you can start chatting with him using BBM. For the second invitation option, when your friend is near, you need to ask him to open BBM app on his phone and on the top side of the profile, you can see BBM PIN and PIN Barcode. If the PIN Barcode is not visible, you will have to press ‘show’ to view the code. Next, you will have to place your phone on your friend’s phone to scan the code that is displayed on your friend’s phone. You need to select Scan or invite contact and after scanning the contact will be added to BBM contacts.

How to exchange messages on BBM?
After adding contacts, from the contacts tab you need to select the friends with whom you want to chat. You will see the chat window open for you to type messages. You do not need to check your phone consistently to check whether anyone has sent you messages or not. When you receive a message, the phone will show new message alert at the top of the homescreen. If you see the alert, you can open BBM app and start conversing.  The PING feature lets you alert someone by sending a sound and vibrate alert that you are waiting for him/her to reply.

RIM BlackBerry Style Review

BlackBerry Style 9670 is flip phone with QWERTY keyboard. In the past, BlackBerry had released the Pearl Flip into the market; however the Style 9670 is their first flip phone to have a full keyboard. The phone measures 96 x 60 x 18.5 mm and weighs 131g.

The main display of the BlackBerry Style 9670 measures 2.7 inches and has a display resolution of 360 x 480 pixels. It supports 65k colors. The display is quite bright and it is readable in any lighting conditions. The QWERTY keyboard is very user-friendly. On the left side of the BlackBerry Style 9670, you can find 3.5mm audio jack and microUSB port.

On the right, you can find the volume controller along with the convenience key. There is only one convenience key on the phone. The flip mechanism is quite good, however you will always face the inconvenience of flipping it open and shutting whenever you want to answer a call or write a text message.

The Style 9670 has the BlackBerry OS 6 operating system. The internal memory of the phone is 512 MB and comes with an 8GB microSD card. The external memory can read up to 16GB of microSD. The phone’s performance is exceptional as it runs on 624 MHz processor. On the home screen, there is a persistent bar that gives you quick access to features like Favorites, Media, Downloads, Frequent and All. The notification area does well in informing you about alerts such as messages, texts, calls, updates from Facebook and Twitter. The universal search feature lets you search your phone by inputting the relevant text.

The 5 megapixel camera comes with autofocus and dual LED flash. Even though the phone has flash, the images appeared grainy. The photos that were taken outdoors also appeared somewhat grainy and had unnatural contrast. You can record videos at 640 x 480 pixels. The music player has a simple interface but has got all the basic features. Sound through the boxed headphones as well as the loudspeaker appeared to be of mediocre quality. You can videos of 800 x 480 pixels on Style 9670.

The Style 9670 is an EVDO Rev A device that lets you browse on net through 3G and WLAN. The WebKit browser looks good but loads pages at a slow pace. The Li-Ion 1150 mAh battery gives a standby time of over 260 hours and talk time of over 4 hours. You can listen to up to 14 hours of continuous music on this phone.

BlackBerry Bold 9780 Review

BlackBerry Bold 9780 is the successor to the  RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 that was released last year. We were disappointed to know that the phone looks very identical to the predecessor phone. The phone measures 109 x 60 x 14 mm and weighs 122g.

The size of the TFT display is 2.44 inches and has a resolution of 480 x 360 pixels and supports 65m colors. The display is quite decent and viewing angles are also good. Users will not find it difficult to view the contents of the display outdoors. The portrait style QWERTY keyboard works flawlessly, however people with large fingers can face some problems initially. Between the display and the keyboard you can find the optical trackpad along with the physical buttons like Send, End, Menu and Back.

On the left side of the BlackBerry Bold 9780, you can find the left convenience button along with the microUSB slot and 3.5 mm audio headset jack. On the right, you can find the right convenience button and volume controller can be found. On the top, there is a mute button and display lock button. As compared to the 3.2 megapixel camera on Bold 9700, the Bold 9780 sports a 5 megapixel camera with dual LED flash.

The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is the third RIM phone to run on the RIM plaform OS 6. The internal memory of the phone is 256MB and 512MB RAM. The phone runs on 624Mhz processor. The Social Feeds app lets you access social networking sites like Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. There are plenty of third party apps on the phone such as BlackBerry Maps for GPS navigation, YouTube, Sudoku, Blackberry Messenger and other chatting messengers like AIM, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and Google Talk.

The 5 megapixel autofocus camera is capable of taking high quality images outdoors, however you will not be impressed with the images taken by the Bold 9780 indoors even though the flash tries its best to illuminate the scene. It can also record high definition videos at a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels at 3 fps. The music player is visually impressive and has many items such as album cover, onscreen controls, song info, etc.

The WebKit browser lacks Flash but it renders pages quickly and the web pages appear the same way as they on a desktop. You can enjoy surfing the web at 3G speeds and also through Wi-Fi. The standard Li-Ion 1500 mAh battery gives a standby time of over 400 hours on 3G and talk time of up to 6 hours on 3G.
