HTC Smart Review – Semi-Smartphone powered with Linux based BREW OS

HTC Smart is the new semi-smartphone from HTC which does not run on Windows Mobile or Android OS but runs on the Linux based OS called Brew Mobile. The phone weighs 108g and measures 104 x 55 x 12.8 mm. As far as design is concerned, the phone looks very similar to other HTC phones. The QVGA resistive TFT touch screen measures 2.8 inches and displays 256k colors at a display resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. The image quality is not the best and the display fades out when it is viewed under direct sunlight. Since the phone does not have a stylus, you will have to make use of your finger for navigation. Moreover, you will have to press more because resistive display usually requires more a stronger push as compared to capacitive display.

Above the display, there is a ear piece and display features like secondary camera and light sensor is missing. Below the display, there are four hardware buttons of which three are meant for call, menu and back and the last one is the Option key. On the left side of the phone there is a volume controller and on the right side of the phone there is a camera shutter key. At the top you will find the 3.5mm audio jack and at the bottom there is a miniUSB port for connect data cable and charger. At the rear, you can find the 3.15 megapixel camera with LED flash along with the loudspeaker. When you remove the back panel, you will be able to access the battery and the microSD card slot.

Brew Mobile has OS has HTC Sense UI and allows the user to customize the phone with three home screens. Brew (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) is a very simple OS as compared to the other operating systems found on other phones. The internal memory of the phone is 256MB and it can read up to 16GB of microSD. The phone works on a 300 MHz processor. While using the HTC Smart, we noticed that lagged at several occasions.

The 3.15 megapixel camera with LED flash snaps amazing photographs; however the photos are not very clear. It allows you to capture videos at 15fps and the quality is not something we felt like talking about. The interface of the music player is simple and has features like album art, repeat, shuffle but lacks equalizer or visualization options. There is no dedicated video player on the phone. You can watch videos by playing the video files present in the gallery. The sound output through the boxed earphone and the loudspeaker were found to be good.

There is no WLAN feature and you can connect to the web through 3G at 3.6Mbps HSDPA. The OBIGO browser available on the phone is very simple and lacks important features such as Flash. However, you can install Opera Mini on the phone for better browsing experience. The other features of the phone include Bluetooth and stereo FM radio with RDS. The Li-Ion 1100 mAh battery gives a standby time of 600 hours on 3G and talk time of over 6 hours on 3G.
