Microsoft Kin One Review – Compact Yet Powerful Phone

Microsoft Kin One is a low cost phone that sports the Microsoft’s Kin OS. Another recent phone from Microsoft powered Kin OS is the Microsoft Kin Two phone which we will review very soon. Verizon brings this Kin One to the market with a two-year contract. Holding the Kin One is such a delight. It measures 82.7 x 63.5 x 19.1mm and weighs only 110.6g. The phone is made up of dark grey colored plastic composite mixture which makes the phone sturdy and does not catch scratches easily. The edges of the phone are rounded.

The QVGA capacitive touch screen display of the phone measures 2.6 inches and has a display resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. Images appear quite sharp and also appear very clear even if you view it from different angles. However, the clarity is lost when you view the phone under sunlight. Sliding the display upwards gives you access to the QWERTY keyboard. While typing, you can hold the phone single-handedly or two-handedly. The phone does not have an on-screen keyboard. The buttons that are present outside of the keyboard include volume controller, camera launcher and display-lock button.

The Kin One is powered with Nvidia Tegra platform, 600 MHz processor. It has got 256MB RAM and an in-built memory of 4GB. Kin OS is an operating system that is mainly meant for social networking. As far as performance is concerned, we found that the phone would stop responding for few seconds and once when the phone froze, we had to remove the battery and put it back again to start the phone as the phone could not be restarted by pressing the reset button.

You can access your favorite social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. You can make use of the YouTube app to watch videos. The MS Office app can be used for viewing Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and PDF files. The other application includes Feed Reader and Zune Experience. Zune Experience allows you listen to streaming music and watch streaming videos. Sound output through the provided headphone is quite loud and clear.

The 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash is very good as the snaps contained a lot of details and had rich colors. It has got features like geo-tagging and smile detection. You can also record VGA videos at 30fps. The web browser present on the phone has got features like pinch to zoom, favorites, easy navigation, etc. However it lacks Flash support. You can browse the web at 3G speeds of 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 2Mbps HSUPA and WLAN. The other features of the phone include assisted GPS, stereo FM radio with RDS and Bluetooth. The standard Li-Ion 1240 mAh battery gives a talk time of 5.7 hours and 210 hours of standby time.
