Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Review

The first touch sensitive phone from Nokia – 5800 XpressMusic was an instant hit because it had all the features and came with an affordable price tag. The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is the second touch sensitive phone from Nokia. As compared to Nokia 5800, the Nokia 5530 is low on configuration. Even though the phone is not aesthetically beautiful, it looks very similar to Nokia 5800 and its build appears to be very solid and durable. The phone weighs 107g and measures 104 x 49 x 13mm.

The resistive touch screen display screen measures 2.9 inches which is less than the display size of Nokia 5800 which measures 3.2 inches. It has a display resolution of 360 x 640 pixels and is capable of displaying 16m colors. On the left side of the phone, you can find the microSD and SIM card slots and on the right there is a volume controller, display screen lock and camera launcher. On the top side of the phone, you can find the microUSB slot, 3.5mm audio jack, charger port and power button. At the rear, there is a camera with flash and stylus compartment.

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is powered with Symbian s60 5th edition OS which can be found on Nokia 5800, Nokia N97, Samsung Omnia HD i8910 and Sony Ericsson Vivaz. The best part about this OS is that many new updates have been released in the recent past which also includes kinetic scrolling. On the home screen, there is a contact bar where you can add 20 contacts and you can scroll it by sliding a finger on it. You can also add 4 of your favorite apps on the home screen. Creating a text message or email is quite easy as it has got plenty of typing options such as full sized onscreen QWERTY keyboard, virtual alphanumeric keypad, and handwriting recognition.

The internal memory of the phone is 70MB and comes with a 4GB external microSD memory. The external memory can read up to 16GB of microSD.  The ARM 11 434Mhz processor brings about snappy performance. Data transfer can be done through USB and v2.0 Bluetooth. The music player has equalizer presets and lets you filter tracks by artist, album, playlist, etc. There is stereo FM radio with RDS. Sound quality through the loudspeaker is great but we did not like the boxed earphones. We recommend you to use your own 3.5mm earphone. You will love watching videos on this phone.

The interface of the 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash is the same as the one present on Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia N97. Snaps lack detail when taken in dim light and even though flash fires every time you take snap in dim light. Snaps taken in bright light are passable. Captured videos are good and the clarity of the sound on captured videos is great.

The limited Flash supported internet browser is the same that is found in Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia N97. The pages load fast and you can tap on the screen twice to zoom into the page. You can connect to the web through GPRS and WLAN only; this means there is no 3G feature on this phone. There is no GPS feature on this phone. The standard Li-Ion 1000 mAh battery gives a standby time of over 300 hours and nearly 5 hours of talk time and since it is a music phone, it lets you enjoy continuous music for up to 27 hours.

Nokia Nuron 5230 Review

T-Mobile USA is supplying the famous Nokia 5230 XpressMusic phone with the name Nokia Nuron 5230 in US. The phone looks very similar to the popular Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone. The phone’s body is white in color with silver colored scheme which and its plastic body looks very impressive. It weighs only 113g and measures 111 x 52 x 14mm. It has got a resistive 3.2 inches LCD touchscreen that displays 16 million colors at a display resolution of 360 x 640 pixels. The image quality was found to be excellent and even under the direct sunlight the display was manageable; however we had to set the brightness to the maximum.

Below the display, you can find three tactile butons namely call receive, menu and end button. On the left side of the phone, you can find the SIM card and microSD slots whereas on the right side you can find the volume controller, camera launcher, and the display lock button. The microUSB port, charger port and 3.5mm audio headset jack and the power button are located at the top. At the rear, you can find the 2 megapixel camera.

Nokia Nuron 5230 is powered with s60 5th edition Symbian OS. The home screen allows you to do lot of things. You can access the clock and its settings, change profile, access your four favorite icons, search the web and your content on phone, launch the browser, etc. The onscreen keyboard is very user-friendly and you can also switch over to virtual alphanumeric keypad or handwriting recognition for convenience. The internet browser as same as the one you can find on Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia N97. It is fast and Flash enabled and you can surf the web at 3G speeds of 3.6Mbps. The phone lacks WLAN feature.

The performance of the 2 megapixel camera on the Nokia Nuron 5230 is below average. However, the camera application is same as the ones found on Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97. It has got plenty of features scene modes, white balance, photo editor, and allows you to share your pics through Ovi, Vox and Flickr. The images lacked detail and appeared hazy. It can capture videos at a resolution of 640 x 360 at 30fps. The music player allows you to filter songs by artist, album, playlist, genre, etc. The equalizer settings help in amplifying the sound output to some extent. The video player plays movies smoothly.

The internal memory of the phone is 70MB and comes with 4GB microSD and it can accept up to 16GB of microSD. The other features of the phone are stereo radio with RDS and Bluetooth 2.0. The standard Li-Ion BL-5J 1320 mAh battery gives a talk time of over 4 hours on 3G and standby time of over 450 hours on 3G.

The Nokia N97 Review: Is it worth your money?

Nokia has produced several master-pieces like the Nokia N95, E71, N96, E90 communicator and the likes of them. The latest contender in the line-up happens to be the elegant N97, which will feature a tilting 3.5-inch touch screen, slide-out full QWERTY keyboard, especially designed to cater to the needs of the Internet-savvy users.
nokia-n97

Initially, there was a big fuss about the incompatibility of the N97 with the Nokia’s Ovi Internet services such as the Nokia Maps, music store and N-Gage gaming platform, but now everything has been resolved and Nokia has provided full compliance and cent percent compatibility with all the OVI services.

Even after all this, with presence of the AT&T tilt, Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, and Sony Xperia in the market (all of them more of less big failures in the market), the million dollar question would be – whether N97 is really worth your money?
nokia-n97_2
Well, in terms of the tech specs, surely there isn’t much to complain about (unlike Xperia or the iPhone 3G), as you get whopping 32GB onboard memory, which can be further increased by an additional 16GB microSD card, a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, quad-band GSM operation and HSDPA compliance.

The N97 is supposed to be the top N-series smartphone, surpassing all its predecessors including the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music as well as Nokia N96, but the high pricing will surely be a concern. At the moment, looking at hefty price tags of $600-$769.99, even the faithful Nokia users are not too keen to buy the Nokia N97. So, with iPhone 3G S around the corner and many other smartphones competing for supremacy, Nokia will have to give a serious thought to the price-factor if they want to dominate the market.
nokian97_1
The high pricing and lack of a U.S. carrier were the major reasons behind the downfall of the Xperia in the States, and the N97 may suffer a similar fate, if Nokia doesn’t really make some quick moves to catch the eyes of the customers.

As a customer, the best thing would be to hold back for a few days and hope for a considerable price drop rather than putting your money on N97 at the moment! (if you’ve got extra $1000 to shell out, that’s a different issue!
