LG Fathom VS750 Review

When all the world is waiting for Windows Phone 7 devices, LG has managed to release first Windows Mobile device for Verizon – LG Fathom VS750. The phone’s look won’t impress you; however its durability can be felt through its plastic construction. The corner and edges are slightly curved. The phone measures 115 x 56 x 17mm and weighs 152 which is slightly on the bulky side. It has got a 3.2 inches TFT resistive touchscreen that is capable of displaying 256k colors at a display resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. It is not easy to view the display under bright sunlight.

Below the display of LG Fathom, you can find three physical buttons namely, Send, Start (Menu) and End. On the sides of the phone you can find the usual buttons such as volume controller, microUSB port for data transfer, reset button, 3.5mm audio jack, task manager key, camera shutter button, power/display lock button, microSD card slot. The 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera is located behind with the external speaker. Sliding the display will reveal the 4-row QWERTY keyboard. The keys are placed in straight rows and you will find it easy to use for comfortable typing.
The LG Fathom runs on Windows Mobile Professional 6.5.3 OS. You can add frequently used apps to the homescreen. The phone is powered with Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 1 GHz processor. It has got 256MB RAM and 512MB ROM and the external memory can detect up to 16GB of microSD. The phone is shipped with 4GB microSD. You can use the Windows Mobile Email app for setting up POP, IMAP and Exchange email accounts. The Verizon IM app can be used to go online on your favorite messengers such as AIM, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger. However, you are charged every time you send and receive message.

The LG Fathom VS750 has got the new Microsoft Bing application for searching GPS maps, driving directions, traffic update, etc. You can use the Verizon VZ Navigator app for GPS navigation. There are no social networking apps on the phone but they can be downloaded from Windows Marketplace. The Office Mobile lets you view all kinds of office documents.

The 3.2 megapixel camera has got plenty of options and simple interface. It takes about 4 seconds to focus on an image and more seconds for capturing and saving the image. Since the camera lacks flash, the quality of the images is poor when taken in dim lighting conditions. You can record videos at 640 x 480 resolution at 20fps. LG Fathom allows you to surf on the web at 3G speeds of 7.2Mbps on HSDPA and WLAN. The phone lacks radio. The standard 1500 mAh Li-Po battery gives a standby time of over 450 hours and talk time of nearly 7 hours.

Motorola Droid X Review

Verizon Wireless has introduced a new Motorola phone with Android OS – Motorola Droid X M8810. This phone is the successor to the original Motorola Droid A855 that was released last year. The phone weighs 155g and measures 127.5 x 65.5 x 9.9 mm. It comes with a TFT capactive touchscreen display that measures 4.3 inches and has a FWVGA display resolution of 480 x 854 pixels and is capable of displaying up to 16m colors.  It goes without saying that phone is bulky; however, the guys at Motorola have tried their best to make the phone as thin as possible.

Below the display of Motorola Droid X, there are four physical buttons namely Menu, Home, Back and Search. On the left side of the phone, you can find the microUSB and micro HDMI video port.  On the top, there is power and display lock button along with the 3.5mm audio jack.  On the right side, there is a volume controller and camera launcher. At the rear, there is an 8MP camera with flash and external speaker. The microSDHC slot can be accessed by opening the back panel.
The Motorola Droid X runs on Android 2.1 OS which provides the user with 7 home screens. In the late summer, Motorola has announced that the OS will be updated to Android 2.2 (Froyo). The internal memory of the phone is 8GB with 512MB RAM. It can detect up to 32GB of memory. The phone is powered with OMAP3630 720Mhz processor and PowerVR SGX530 GPU which produces snappy performance.

You can setup IMAP, POP3 and Exchange email accounts. You can make use of social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Picasa, Photobucket, and Twitter on Motorola Droid X. The home screen allows you to add messages widgets which will let you see your text messages and emails. You can also add social networking widget on the home screen to get update from all your buddies. The News widget helps you fetch latest news from Digg, Fox Sports, Reuters, and USA Today.

The 8MP autofocus camera with dual LED flash is excellent as it takes amazing photographs in any lighting conditions. It has got features like geo-tagging, 8 scene modes, and 8 color effects, face detection, etc. Videos can be recorded at 1280 x 720 pixels at 24 frames per second and also at lower resolutions at 30 frames per second. The stock Android 2.1 music player has got features like album art and equalizer presets. The sound through the loudspeaker was not loud enough and even the sound output through boxed headset was found to be good. We felt the same even when we listened to the FM Radio on the Motorola Droid X.

You can connect to the web on 3G at 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and at 2.0 Mbps HSUPA and also through WLAN. The Webkit browser has features like multitouch pinch-to-zoom, double tap for zooming, allows you to open 8 windows at a time, bookmarks and 3D side-to-side scrolling. The YouTube videos that are embedded on webpage are opened separately on the YouTube player. The other feature present on the phone includes Bluetooth and assisted GPS. The standard Li-Po 1540 mAh battery gives a talk time of 8 hours and over 9 days of stand-by time.

Microsoft Kin Two Review – Cool Phone For Social Networking and Taking High Quality Snaps

Recently, Verizon Wireless released two Microsoft Kin phones namely Kin One and Kin Two. We reviewed the Kin One in the previous week and we are going to review the other Kin phone – the Microsoft Kin Two. The Microsoft Kin Two runs on Kin OS which is mainly a platform that can be best used for social networking and for listening to streaming music. As far as the design of concerned, the Microsoft Kin Two look awesome as it looks very sleek and the build is well done. The body of the phone is made up of scratch resistant material.

The TFT capacitive touchscreen display of Microsoft Kin Two measures 3.4 inches and it has a display resolution of 320 x 480 pixels and is capable of displaying 16 million colors. The accelerometer sensor automatically rotates the display of the phone horizontally or vertically. The proximity sensor feature turns off the display when the phone is held near your face while answering a call so that you do not accidently press any touch sensitive feature. Sliding the display to right will let you access the QWERTY keyboard which is not only spacious but is very comfortable to use.

The Kin OS is specially designed for users who are hooked on to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. The Nvidia Tegra platform 600Mhz processor makes sure that the performance of the phone is fast. However, the phone does freezes occasionally. The Loop application is a unique feature of the phone that lets you all your social networking profiles from one location and the phone keeps on refreshing the profiles to provide you with the most updated content.

The Microsoft Kin Two has an internal memory of 8GB and has 256MB RAM and it no external memory slot. It has an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash that can take high quality images and videos  in both bright and dim environments. The snaps are automatically loaded to the Microsoft Kin Studio which lets you access your snaps online. There is no secondary video calling camera.

Nokia 7705 Twist Review

Verizon brings to Nokia 7705 which is one of the smallest phones that is available in the market. Nokia has named it Twist because there is a hidden keyboard that twists out. This phone has been released by Nokia to give competition to phones like Samsung Alias 2 and LG enV3. It measures only 69 x 69 x 15 mm and weighs 98g. The QVGA display measures 2.4 inches and has a display resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and supports 262k colors. The light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the display depending on the lighting conditions.

Below the display, you can find a square d-pad and it is surrounded by touch-sensitive soft keys and clear key. There is an LED at the front of the Nokia 7705 that flashes 6 different colors and blinks whenever you get a message or a missed call. On the sides of the phone, you can find the volume controller, microUSB port, microSD card slot, 2.5mm audio headset jack and external speaker. At the rear, the phone houses the 3 megapixel camera with flash and when you open the phone, you will find a large mirror.

The QWERTY keyboard has been designed well and has got 5 rows of keys and special buttons for launching the browser, voice command, camera, speaker phone and messaging. Even though the keys are small, they are really user-friendly and you will make not make many efforts while using it. The Habitat mode present on the Nokia 7705 brings you two home screens namely, Super World and Urban Jungle. Both home screens shows you an icon of your contact that you have recently spoken to.

We were surprised to find a 3 megapixel camera on the Nokia 7705 Twist. Not only this, it has got a flash too. However, the images that were taken through were not that impressive. The music player can be played in the background and the sound through the mono speaker was nothing special. The phone can detect 16GB of external memory and has an internal memory of 119MB.

The HTML browser on the phone does not give a good browsing experience as the phone has a very small screen. It does not play embedded YouTube videos; however, the YouTube videos can be viewed through the YouTube site. Some other apps present on the phone include VZ Navigator for GPS, VCast Music and VCast Videos. You can also download plenty of games and applications over the web for this phone. The standard Li-Ion 860 mAh battery gives a talk time of 4.5 hours and standby time of 11 hours.

Palm Pixi Plus Review

Palm Pixi Plus from Verizon Wireless has almost the same features that can be found on Sprint’s Palm Pixi. The phone is slim and the design has been kept simple. It has got a capactive TFT touchscreen display that measures 2.63 inches with a display resolution of 320 x 400 pixels and supports 256k colors. It supports multi-touch. We noticed that the accelerometer of the phone did not function well as it delayed to rotate the display vertically or horizontally whenever we held the phone vertically and horizontally.

At the top side of the phone, you can find the 3.5mm audio headset jack and a power button. On the right side of the phone, you can find the volume controller, mute button and microUSB slot. At the left side, you can find the speakers, camera launcher key and LED flash at the rear. The keyboard is a bit tacky and new users will find it difficult to make use of it. However, after you use it for a few days, you will get the hang of it. The keys are small in size but have been spaced well.

The Palm Pixi Plus has got a Qualcomm MSM7627 600Mhz processer and has a dedicated graphics accelerator. It has got 192MB RAM only. The CPU performs sluggishly and many times you will experience while using the phone. Still the phone does all you to multi-tasking. The Palm webOS is good but lacks the aura of Android or Symbian OS. The Synergy feature lets you access all your contacts from Google, Facebook, Microsoft Exchange, Linkedin and Yahoo in one list. The Mobile Hotspot feature lets you create your own Wi-Fi network which means other Wi-Fi enabled devices can make use of the internet connection of your phone through Wi-Fi.

The 2 megapixel camera with LED flash is okay as it does not have much features and even the quality of the images are not the best. The recorded videos can be sent through email, MMS and you can even upload them on Facebook or YouTube. The Palm Pixi Plus lacks the VCast service from Verizon. The music player allows you to organize your songs by artists, albums and genres. You can purchase new songs through the Amazon MP3 store. The sound through the headphones was found to be good but the output through the loudspeaker is low.

The Palm Pixi Plus’s web browser lacks Flash and has limited features. You can surf the web at 3G speeds of 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 5.76Mbps HSUPA. The other features of the phone include 8GB internal storage, Bluetooth and assisted GPS. The 1150 mAh battery gives a standby time of up to 350hours and talk time of up to 4 hours (3G).

Samsung Trance from Verizon Wireless

samsung-trance

Verizon Wireless just launched another handset from Samsung- the Samsung Trance. This touch screen phone aims to target users who want an iPhone-like cell phone for less. It has a touchpad navigation and has context sensitive keys. This is one of the more powerful music phones in the market. It has a pretty good audio system courtesy of Bang & Olufsen’s ICEpower amps. This is quite a good looking slider phone. Unlike most slide phone in the market, the Samsung Trance is slim. It comes in two colors- Electric Red and Piano Black.

You can take advantage of the V CAST Music option for your Samsung Trance. It also comes with a mircroSD card slot that can support up to 16GB of space. You can play various music formats with it like wma, mp3, aac and wma formats. With an internal memory of 1GB, you can store a lot of music and data on this phone.

The Samsung Trance also doubles up as a 1.3 megapixel camera phone. It’s a pretty functional camera phone with brightness adjustment, nightshot capability, several color effects, preview options, multi-shots and digital zoom. It also has Bluetooth connectivity, voice command, organizer and speaker phone features.
